INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPO

Access to Intellectual Information During the period under review, Rand Water established a Resource Centre to improve knowledge transfer and sharing with the emphasis to acquire both paper-based and digital external knowledge resources for its employees on an easily accessible platform. The Resource Centre offers access to a collection of 9,600 e-journals, approximately 16,000 paper books, 5,800 e-books and 10 digital repositories, including Engineering Workbench, APQC, EBSCO, Sabinet and Science Direct. The collection is published on the recently modernised Resource Centre Intranet, social media and Rand Water Website. The Centre further captures, safeguards and disseminates the knowledge products created to both internal and external stakeholders. The knowledge about our Heritage, in line with the celebration of Rand Water’s 120 years of existence, is captured in a reference book titled “An African Giant on the Move”. The book is part of the trilogy of Rand Water books describing the incredible hundred- and twenty-year journey and heritage of Rand Water since its establishment in 1903, its focus is on the past decade from 2014 to 2023, with emphasis on the growth of Rand Water, how we made a difference by caring, our value of excellence and achievements, how we overcame our challenges and how we face the future. The book supplements the two (2) existing books “ The Substance of Uniquity” and “In Pursuit of Excellence”, which celebrated the 110 years’ existence of Rand Water. The three (3) books collectively commemorate our heritage. Some additional knowledge transfer and sharing initiatives we have undertaken during this financial year 2024/25 include the following: Collaboration, facilitation, and participation in the live/ field testing or experimental phase for research topics about creating Digital and Knowledge Twins of Pumpsets This initiative was a joint effort, conducted in collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch as part of the research activities of the Rand Water Professorial Chair in Mechanical Engineering, over two (2) days at the Vereeniging Pumping Station. Technology Approval Group (TAG) workshops Two (2) workshops were conducted in partnership with Isle Utilities. The focus was on the water industry experience and expertise. Knowledge was applied to screen potential technologies that could benefit the water sector. The Digital Acceleration in Local Government Summit The Summit was hosted by eThekwini Municipality. A research paper on a pilot project titled “Use of a Geotagging Solution to Improve Asset Management and Access to Information” was presented by Rand Water to both in-person and virtual attendees to share knowledge about this practical solution. The Future Leader Trend Watch Breakfast and Innovation League Awards This was a premier event, that brings together over 200 innovation management professionals from over 30 countries, focused on celebrating excellence in innovation, global innovation trends and future foresight. Rand Water was awarded the Innovation League Silver Award, achieving the second-highest overall score. Key insights from the event included the strategic value of adopting the ISO 56001 Innovation Management Standard, a structured framework that offers practical tools to improve innovation practices within organisations. Rand Water Digital Museum Rand Water Digital Museum was established to enable sharing of knowledge without comprising security aspects as envisaged in the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act, No. 8 of 2019. Its initiative is more than an archive, it is a story of how Rand Water has developed, innovated, and sustained communities for over a century which included collecting, preserving and curating content. The highlights of the content identified capture the heart and legacy of Rand Water. These areas can be imagined as “Halls” or “Chapters” of the Digital Museum, each bringing a piece of the Rand Water’s history to life. In the financial year 2024/25, we have collected, captured and digitised artefacts that contribute to the institutional memory and knowledge management programme of the organisation as:
