RAND WATER ANNUAL REPORT 2023
Rand Water Abstraction Volumes (cumulative for the year) The current available raw water sources within Rand Water’s area of supply are hardly sufficient to maintain the current increase in demand throughout Rand Water’s Area of Supply. This has been compounded by the delay in the next phase of Lesotho Highlands Water Projects which will only be implemented in 2028. The need for more robust management of demand cannot be over emphasised. Water losses must be managed and reduced; water use efficiency needs to be improved extensively to ensure future sustainability of supply. Monitoring of Rand Water Network Water Losses Rand Water has adopted the International Water Association (IWA) standard methodology, modified for the South African context, for monitoring and reporting on non-revenue water. This has been implemented since July 2021. In terms of the IWA methodology adapted for Rand Water, non-revenue water comprises of three (3) components: • Unbilled authorised consumption - Referring to the water that is used by the organisation to produce potable water (e.g., process water and site consumption) • Apparent/ commercial losses– Comprising of metering inaccuracies, water theft, data errors etc. • Real or physical losses - The actual leakage in the network and the largest portion of NRW, that must be reduced (Corporate KPIs target for Rand Water is set on this portion of NRW ) Water balance for the 12 months
Own use (net, incl. recovered water)- 10Mℓ/d OR - 0.2%
Apparent losses 79 Mℓ/d or 1.6%
NON REVENUE 354 Mℓ/d 7.06% of SIV
Unavoidable Annual Real loss 35 Mℓ/d or 0.7%
Real losses 250 Mℓ/d 4.71%

Rand Water has been experiencing a growing trend in its non-revenue water (NRW) both in quantity and as a percentage of system input volume. In addition, the NRW has been highly variable which creates uncertainty and instability and is putting Rand Water’s financial viability at risk. A better understanding of this situation and implementation of appropriate measures should assist Rand Water to turn it around. The goal is to achieve a reduction in the NRW to an acceptable level and/or comparable with historical best performances.
