Spring school holiday programme from 23-30 September 2019. The mosaic artwork included a portrait of the late stalwart Raymond Mhlaba, a map of Africa n Continent Map and the South African À ag. The project bene ¿ tted 22 visual artists (19 male and 3 female) and 30 learners (15 male and 15 female). The following community libraries were selected for the project: Tshepiso Community Library in Tshepiso, Sedibeng; Ivory Community Library in Ivory Park North in the City of Joburg; Tarlton Community Library in Tarlton, Mokgale City; Kokosi Community Library in Foucheville in West Rand; and Randfontein Community Library in Randfontein, West Rand. The department implemented the visual arts holiday programme from 10 February to 4 March 2020 bene ¿ tting a total of 23 visual artists (21 male and 2 female) through decorative mosaics with the theme: “Celebrating local heroes and heroines and promoting the national À ag” at 5 community libraries: Atteridgeville Community Library in Tshwane; Simunye Community Library in Johannesburg; Boipatong Community Library in Sedibeng; Ratanda Ext 23 Community Library in Lesedi; and Magaliesburg Community Library in Mogale. During the period under review, the department implemented ¿ vevisual artsexhibitions bene ¿ tting a total of 53 visual artists (37male, 10 female, 5 youth male and 1 youth female). The ¿ rst exhibition was a collaboration between the department and De ¿ ne Arts that presented the African Renaissance Art Exhibition held from 31 May to 30 June 2019 at the Kagiso Memorial Centre in Kagiso, West Rand. The exhibition included sculpture, paintings, tapestry, digital painting, mixed media and paper artworks by various artists from Gauteng and aimed to capture milestones of African arts and give exposure to the creativity of Gauteng’s visual artists. A total of 195 art pieces of all media were exhibited by 23 visual artists (18 male and 5 female). Furthermore, ten local visual artists (7 male and 3 female) were provided with a platform to exhibit their artworks from 14 – 18 September 2019 at the Women’s Living Heritage Monument in Pretoria in the City of Tshwane. Nine local visual artists (7 male and 2 female) were provided with a platform
a ¿ ve-day workshop from 16–20 March 2020 at Co-Lab creative hub, Johannesburg bene ¿ tting 24 creatives (10 male and 14 female). During the ¿ nancial year, the department implemented 14 market access initiatives which bene ¿ tted 177 crafters, visual artists and fashion designers (91 male and 86 female). The purpose of the programme was to create market access platforms for creatives to showcase and sell their products to generate income and improve their livelihoods. The market access initiatives included the Rand Easter Show 19–28 April 2019 at the NASREC Expo Centre in Johannesburg; the Youth Expo held from 13–17 May 2019 at NASREC Expo Centre in Johannesburg; the Arnold Classic Games held from 17-19 May 2019 at Sandton Convention Centre; and the Women’s Day Commemoration held on 9 August 2019 at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. Arts and Craft Markets were held at the Kagiso Monument and Recreational Centre; the Sharpeville and Moses Molelekwa Arts and Craft market; the Sharpeville Precinct; and the Ga- Rankuwa Arts Centre. During the period under review, the department painted 8 art murals in public spaces through the arts programme . The purpose of the murals is to communicate positive messages, commemorate local heroes and heroines, promote national symbols and instil a sense of pride and patriotism within communities. These included painting the national symbols in the children’s sections of Evaton North Community Library, Kingsway Community Library, Naturena Community Library and Rietvlei Community Library from 27 February to 4 March 2020. The visual arts programmes bene ¿ tted a total of 15 visual artists (13 male and 2 female) as follows: Sharpeville Community Hall from 1–30 August 2019; Moses Molelekwa Art Centre in Tembisa from 20 August 2019 to 9 September 2019; Chief Mogale Multi-purpose Centre in Kagiso in Mogale from 26- 30 September 2019; and June 16 Memorial Acre in Soweto from 23-27 December 2019. The department implemented Visual Arts Holiday Programmes in libraries attracting a total of 75 visual artists (55 male and 20 female) where decorative mosaic was implemented during the
