4.2.2 Creative Industries Creative Industries implemented programmes which included creative hubs, capacity building opportunities for practitioners, market access initiatives, mentorship programmes for fashion designers and emerging visual artists; visual arts displayed in public places, implementation of performing arts programmes; ¿ nancial support to upcoming artists; and arts and culture events supported. In an endeavour to accomplish the interventions of the craft strategy, the department implemented the following product development programmes in the 10 creative hubs bene ¿ tting 87 artists/crafters (33 male and 54 female) during the ¿ nancial year. The Alexandra, Magaliesburg, Mpumelelo, Ekangala; and Sokhulumi hub received stipends. • BoipatongHub in the Emfuleni Local Municipality was supported with raw materials to implement embroidery and mosaic production bene ¿ tting a total of 16 visual artists (4 male and 12 female). • Sharpeville Hub in the Sedibeng Local Municipality produced organic soaps and candles by 6 women at Sharpeville Old Police Station in Sharpeville, Sedibeng. • O.R Tambo Narrative Centre in Ekurhuleni was supported with raw materials to produce glass slumping and pottery production bene ¿ tting 9 crafters (5 male and 4 female). • Soweto Hub - Fashion Design bene ¿ tted a total of 5 young fashion designers (4 male and 1 female). • Kagiso Memorial Hub - at Mosaic Production Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre in West Rand bene ¿ tted a total of 12 creatives (8 male and 4 female). The department conducted mosaic training from 5-19 September 2019 and purchased mosaic raw materials for production. • Alexandra Hub at the City of Johannesburg: to produce various arts and culture products bene ¿ tting a total of 11 EPWP creatives (8 male and 3 female). • Magaliesburg Hub at Mogale Local Municipality: to produce pottery products bene ¿ tted a total of 5 young EPWP creatives (4 male and 1 female).
• Mpumelelo Hub (Devon) at Lesedi: to produce organic bath salts and soaps bene ¿ tting a total of 14 EPWP young women. • Ekangala Hub at the City of Tshwane: to produce bead work products bene ¿ tting a total of 5 EPWP women crafters; and • Sokhulumi Hub at the City of Tshwane: bene ¿ tting a total of 4 EPWP young males for embroidery products at Sokhulumi Craft and Arts Centre. A total of 105 creatives (45 male and 60 female) bene ¿ tted from the 3 mentorship/capacity building programmes and one Enterprise Development Programme implemented in the 2019/20 ¿ nancial year as follows: Two emerging fashion designer mentorship programmes were implemented. The department provided ¿ nancial support (R200 000.00) to Lebohang Kekana popularly known as Quiteria fashion designer towards the design and production of garments. During design and production of the garments, Quiteria worked with 10 women in his company as their mentor during August 2019. The department in collaboration with David Tlale implemented the fashion designer’s mentorship programme through the hosting of the David Tlale Master Class, with a total of 27 emerging fashion designers (11 male and 16 female) on 26 March 2020, at Gauteng Provincial Archives Centre in Kagiso, West Rand. The mentorship programme focused on elements such as the importance of education in the clothing and textile industry; how to build a sustainable brand in South Africa; how to build a cohesive collection; telling a narrative that touches and changes the face of the fashion with minimal resources; and how to be safe and creative during nation-wide lockdown as a fashion designer. A visual artists mentorship programme that focused on ¿ n art and print making artworks was implemented in collaboration with Artists Proof Studio, the Bag Factory and FNB Art Joburg from 12–15 September 2019 at the Sandton Convention Centre with a total of 44 visual artists (24 male and 20 female). The department conducted an Enterprise Development training for Creative Industry Entrepreneurs in a form of Let’s Make It!,
