ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS The occurrence of emerging organic contaminants in the drinking water value chain (from source to tap) is a growing concern for the drinking water industry and consumers, given the adverse health risks these contaminants pose to consumers. These adverse health effects include endocrine disruption, toxicity, teratogenicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. Currently, SANS 241 does not address most of the emerging contaminants of concern. However, Rand Water, in the interest of public health, has implemented monitoring programmes for an extended list of organic contaminants. The identified organic contaminants include industrial chemicals, pesticides, disinfection by-products, and cyanobacteria toxins. An assessment of the identified contaminants is conducted biannually to determine potential risks to customers. The table below contains the results of organic compounds that were assessed in the Rand Water drinking water value chain. None of these compounds were detected at levels that are of concern to human health.
