RAND WATER ANNUAL REPORT 2023
HOW WE CREATE VALUE
POLICY
EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDER IMPACT
Capital Investment Framework
Government.
Government: If the company’s Capital Investment Framework is not managed accurately it would mean that Rand Water will be unable to generate more revenue but instead would make a loss, and since we are a State-owned Entity we need to generate more Revenue than losses to ensure that we make a profit which would benefit government. With that said, the impact for government is that they would not be gaining any profit. Government: Land Management Policies are written up to ensure that the right things are built in the correct areas at the correct time, so if this is not managed accurately the community in which we operate in could be affected and in that case, it becomes a governmental problem.

VALUE CREATED THROUGH INNOVATION Rand Water has established a subsidiary, Rand Water Institute (RWI), with the vision to stimulate, grow, and enhance the competitiveness of Rand Water by improving efficiencies and promote cost savings across the business. Although the RWI was only recently established, it has had significant success to date. The Innovation and Piloting Oversight Committee has been established as a sub-committee of the Executive Committee of Rand Water, with the mandate to oversee the solicitation, selection, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of approved innovation pilot projects. There are approximately 129 research , development, and innovation projects identified across the organisation. Some of the successful innovation pilot projects completed to date include Robotics Process Automation and Leak Detection via Satellite. The RWI aims to promote a culture of innovation. We continuously challenge existing ways of doing things to create a more resilient and value-adding organisation . As collaboration is the key to innovation, the RWI will deepen its cooperation between the different players in the water industry such as its main shareholder, DWS, Professional Chairs at academic institutions, organs of state such as Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Water Research Commission, the Innovation Hub Management Company, the Department of Science and Technology, the Council for Geoscience and other similar organisations. In addition, Rand Water will leverage on its membership with the Technology Approval Group. The Technology Approval Group addresses a ‘gap’ in the market: It promotes strategic level innovation, supports the development and commercialisation of new technology, and helps to secure external Venture Capital investment into the water sector. The following Innovation projects were completed during the period under review, and proof of value has been demonstrated for adoption.
