S4 Pipeline Project This project entails the design, manufacturing, supply and installation of the new 16.7km S4 pipeline from Van Dyk Park to Rynfield. The S4 pipeline is required to augment capacity of the S1 pipeline from Mapleton to Benoni and to provide flexibility that will allow the S1 pipeline to be taken out for inspection and refurbishment. Construction and full commissioning of the S4 pipeline was completed in May 2023.

Emergency Generators–Mapleton- Pumping Station

The emergency generators project is aimed at providing generators to power main water pumps and other supporting infrastructure in case of major power failure. A total of 18 x 2MVA mobile diesel generators and 7 truck horses are provided to allow full pumping capacity at Mapleton pumping station. The generator connection site infrastructure comprises of generator farm, 18 x connection stations, synchronising switchgear and change-over switchgear. Generator connection infrastructure is currently under construction at other three (3) booster sites, Eikenhof, Palmiet and Zwartkopjes pumping stations. The 18 x mobile diesel generators already available will be used to provide the required emergency power at these stations.

S4 Pipeline

Mapleton Upgrade Project The Mapleton Upgrade Project is composed of the Construction of Engine Room 3 and Disinfection Plants to augment the pumping capacity of the Mapleton Pumping Station by 600Mℓ/d to bring the installed capacity from 1335Mℓ/d to 1935Mℓ/d, and the available capacity after standby allowance from 990Mℓ/d to 1290Mℓ/d. The increased pumping capacity will benefit areas such as Brakpan, Benoni, Bloemendal, Delmas, Secunda and Bethal. The project is targeted for completion in December 2024.

Emergency Generators

The B06 Shutdown An 87-hour shutdown was successfully completed on the B06 pipeline from 19 to 23 August 2022. The B06 is a 1700mm internal diameter steel pipeline, parallel to it, is the B04, B10 and B17 pipelines which are part of the Palmiet system. The B06 pipeline runs from Zuikersbosch Water Purification Works to Palmiet Pumping Station and is a critical pipeline ensuring water is supplied to major reservoirs from Palmiet Pumping Station. The scope entailed the replacement of 3200m long by 1732mm outside diameter section of the B06 pipeline that was in a poor condition. The newly constructed B06 pipeline was then tied into the existing 1675mm outside diameter old B06 Pipeline. The tie in also included the removal of the B06/B17 cross connection. The difference in diameters of the old and new B06 pipelines posed as a challenge as it took longer to align the
