RAND WATER ANNUAL REPORT 2023

HOW WE CREATE VALUE

Completion of Projects In the financial year under review, six (6) projects were monitored and targeted for completion. Eight (8) projects were completed as a result of fast-tracking the running projects which led to the overachievement and actual score of 133%. Assets Under Construction (AUC) Reduction The AUC reduction target was 95% against R2.07 billion for the year under review. R2.19 billion AUC reduction was achieved, which translates to an overachievement and actual score of 105%. The shutdowns implemented to commission new/ augmented infrastructure contributed R1.19 billion and R1 billion was the contribution from various projects completed during the Financial Year. Challenges that Impact CAPEX Projects Implementation Below are some of the challenges that impact implementation of CAPEX projects with the two (2) largest challenges being delays on project execution and raw water resource challenges. • Historic delayed project implementation • Assets under construction (AUC) for too long • COVID-19 residual delays on projects • Limited raw water resources • External water losses and inefficient customers • Customers objecting to the after-effects of long Rand Water shutdowns • Internal water losses • Climate Change • Defaulting customers Infrastructure Highlights Vlakfontein Reservoir Vlakfontein Reservoir: 2022 Fulton Awards Nominee and Recipient of the Judges’ Commendation The 210Mℓ Vlakfontein reservoir was constructed to augment water storage at Vlakfontein in the Mapleton

system. The project commenced in February 2020 and was practically completed in March 2023. The reservoir structure is a reinforced concrete post-tensioned reservoir employing innovative design methods during design and construction. Rand Water’s brief at the start of the project was for a unique and innovative design for the reservoir. This led to the reservoir being cylindrical, unlike most Rand Water reservoirs of this size. In fact, it is the largest cylindrical post tensioned reservoir in the country . As far as is known, this is also the largest circular post-tensioned reservoir in the world. Currently, the largest reservoirs are at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where there is an array of 11 circular post-tensioned reservoirs with a capacity of 187.5 Mℓ each. Innovative concrete mix design methods were employed to limit shrinkage and temperatures due to heat of hydration. Strict innovative early-age protection measures and curing methods were employed to ensure durable concrete. The concrete finish is exceptional. Vlakfontein Reservoir was nominated in the Fulton Awards categories for “Infrastructure Greater Than R100 Million Project Value” and “Innovation and Invention in Concrete.” Fulton Awards are hosted by Cement and Concrete SA (CSSA) and are the South African construction, civil engineering and architectural industries’ premier accolades for excellence in concrete. Vlakfontein Reservoir received the judges’ commendation in the category for “Infrastructure Greater Than R100 Million Project Value”.
