The 2022/23 Financial Year marked a milestone in the existence of Rand Water Academy, as it celebrated 10 years of addressing critical resource challenges faced by Rand Water and the water sector locally and abroad. In discharging its primary function, The Rand Water Academy, has supported the reduction of socio-economic challenges such as unemployment and poverty, and has encouraged the economic participation of marginalised groups e.g., youth and females, through its projects. In adapting to an ever-changing environment driven by the 4 th Industrial Revolution, the vision of the Academy has grown beyond training and development and has expanded into avenues that incorporate other complementary models such as enterprise and supplier development initiatives, research and development platforms, and established centres of competence and excellence. National Treasury Graduate Internship Programme The Academy boasts successes achieved in implementing the National Treasury Graduate Internship Programme (NTGIP) and has professionalised unemployed graduates in the built environment with various statutory bodies such as ECSA, SACNASP, and South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN). To date, NTGIP has recruited more than 200 graduates and plans are in place to expand. Key to the successes of this programme are the structured training initiatives undertaken by the graduates, and the support provided by a team of professionalised mentors in various built environment disciplines. A total of 11 graduates were professionalised in the 2022/23 Financial Year: three (3) received their certificates and eight (8) are awaiting certificates. In the same Financial Year, the National Treasury requested that a total of 12 graduates be transferred from one (1) Water Board to Rand Water. The transfer was based on National Treasury’s recognition of Rand Water’s capability to professionalise graduates within record time, funded through the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant. The graduates were transferred to Rand Water, and they have commenced with their professionalisation journey. They are due to receive their professional status at different intervals based on their individual progress on the project. An additional 15 graduates are planned to be recruited on the project in the 2023/24 Financial Year.
