the department offered the province an opportunity to host Sunshine Tour golf (signature) events including the SA Open from 9–12 January 2020 at Randpark Golf Club in Central Johannesburg. The SunshineTourhostedthe EyeofAfricaProfessional Golfers Association (PGA) Championship from 16-19 January 2020 at the Eye of Africa Golf Estate, Eikenhof, Johannesburg (South Corridor). The Eye of Africa PGA Championship Tour is a men’s professional golf tour based in South Africa. The department was given the opportunity to invite 5 stakeholders, and 80 general tickets were given to stakeholders within and outside the department. Darren Fichardt won the championship. Kids Golf Clinics : The department in partnership with the Sunshine Tour hosted Kids Golf Clinics during the championship on 19 February 2020 at Serengeti, Kempton Park. The purpose was to give young golfers and those interested in playing the opportunity to meet professional golfers and get coaching advice. This allows professional golfers to give back to the community. • Sunshine Tour Jabra Ladies Tour Pro-Am : The department was given the opportunity by the Sunshine Tour to invite three ladies to participate at the Jabra Ladies Tour Pro-Am on 3 March 2020, Glendower. This was followed by a Pro-Am prize giving later the same afternoon at Glendower Club House. Pro-Ams give amateur golfers the opportunity to play with professionals. The South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) offered the Gauteng Province the opportunity to be part of the 15 th African Gymnastics Championships (signature event) , an of ¿ cial 2020 Olympic quali ¿ er that was to be hosted at Matsport Centre, Pretoria. The 2020 African Gymnastics Championship and lead-up events
were to take place from January to April 2020. The Championships are held under the auspices of the Union of African Gymnastics (UAG) and were expected to attract 3 000 participants, including 300 gymnasts and of ¿ cials from 15 countries across Africa and internationally. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federation postponed the event until further notice. On 8 December 2019, GDSCR in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the 6 th edition of the inaugural Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run event to help deliver strong social and economic outcomes for the province; there were approximately 18 000 participants. The event, involving 5km, 10km and 21km races, started and ended at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. MEC Hlophe, members of the Mandela family, representatives of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, City of Tshwane Municipality senior of ¿ cials and other dignitaries led walkers in remembrance of the route followed by the cortege of the late President Nelson Mandela in 2013. The department mobilised and catered for approximately 10 000 athletes across the 5 departmental Corridors. Nine new projects approved to be implemented during the fourth quarter 2019/20 During the Major Events adjudication (selection) process from 3-6 December 2019, the department approved nine new projects to be implemented during the fourth quarter of 2019/20. The events were postponed after the COVID-19 related lockdown announcement on 15 March 2020. On 18 March 2020, the department submitted a letter requesting the organisers to postpone the events to limit the spread of COVID-19 and asked that they keep the department updated on progress by submitting a status report electronically.
