Enhancing Judicial Excellence

1. PARTNERSHIPS

SAJEI has established working relationships with the following organisations on training related matters:

1.1 National Centre for State Courts (NCSC) The NCSC has provided support to SAJEI on capacity-building. The workshop was facilitated by Mr John Meeks, Vice-President, Institute for Court Management; an experienced Judicial educator from the National Centre for State Courts. (a) Train-the-trainer facilitation skills In order to create a pool of skilled facilitators, SAJEI conducted a Facilitation Skills Course from 08 th to 10 th January 2018. Participants were exposed to principles of Judicial education, practical presentation skills, team presentation and instructional design. (b) Judicial leadership SAJEI conducted two sessions on Judicial leadership. The sessions attended by Regional Court Presidents, Chief Magistrates and Senior Magistrates were conducted by Mr John Meeks. Topics included the needs of a Judicial leader, communication skills, leading in the face of conflict and time management. 1.2 UNDP (a) Judicial Leadership with specific reference to HIV/TB and human rights In partnership with the UNDP, SAJEI conducted a seminar on judicial leadership conducted by Dr Khadija Moalla. The seminar focused on transformational leadership and the objectives were: 1. To provide leaders with learning opportunities to enhance existing leadership skills, generate strategic inclusive options and exponentially leverage their influence through their commitment to the implementation of breakthrough initiatives. 2. To offer lower court judicial officers the opportunity to strategically explore and increase their commitment to address the fundamental social factors and underlying causes that fuel stigma and discrimination and supporting them to identify sustainable and measurable “breakthrough initiatives” that will make a sustainable difference in the response to the HIV epidemic. Mr Oswald Krieling, Chief Magistrate: Northern Cape, presented on Judicial leadership, Ubuntu and collegiality. Mr Mashau Ramalebana, Judicial educator, presented on Judicial leadership and diversity issues in the court environment. Both presentations were well-received and enjoyed by the participants.
