PART C: 1. RESEARCH PROJECTS 1.1 South African Judicial Education Journal

The SAJEI Council constituted the Editorial Board for the publication of the SAJEI Journal. The Editor-in-Chief is Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. The first journal was successfully published during this financial year and it was circulated worldwide. The journal is available on the OCJ website. PART D: 1. SUPPORT TO FOREIGN INSTITUTIONS In terms of section 5(f) of the SAJEI Act (2008), the Institute has to render assistance to foreign Judicial institutions and courts. As a result, the following activities have taken place during this financial year: 1.1 Train-the-Trainer on Environmental Law One of the activities on the 2016/17 Johannesburg Action Plan on integrating environmental law into Judicial curricula is to develop capacity at the Judicial education institutes. In 2017, 30 delegates from 17 countries consisting of senior members of the Judiciary and Heads of Judicial Institutes attended the Train-the-Trainer course on environmental law. 1.2 Roundtable on integrating HIV/TB and Human Rights into Judicial curricula SAJEI organised a Regional Roundtable on HIV/TB and Human Rights. The roundtable was attended by Magistrates and Judges from South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria and Mozambique. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provided logistical support. The objective of the roundtable was to discuss ways to sustain capacity development of judicial officers in African countries on HIV/TB and human rights as a strategy towards strengthening legal and policy environment in the medium- to the long-term. The expected outcome was to obtain consensus on the approach for the integration of modules on HIV/TB and Human Rights into the formal training provided by judicial training institutions in Africa. A Working Group was constituted to ensure implementation of the action plan. 2.1 Judgment writing for Military Judges - Department of Defence The training was conducted as a result of a request from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Law Division for training on judgment writing. The purpose of the workshop was to equip Military Judges with skills on how to improve their judgment writing. Deputy Judge President C Musi and Mr M Ramalebana (Judicial educator/ Senior Magistrate) facilitated the training.

The training was well-received and participants requested further training on topics such as Ethics and Sentencing.
