SAJEI Annual Report V12
TRAINING FOR NEWLY-APPOINTED JUDICIAL OFFICERS The Institute conducts training for newly-appointed Judical Officers. In respect of Judges, training takes place on a biannial basis after the recommendations of the Judicial Service Commission has been approved by the President of the Republic of South Africa. The Magistrates are appointed by the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services. In terms of section 3(1)(f)(i) of the Magistrates Act (Act 99 of 1993): “no person shall be appointed as Magistrates unless he/she has successfully completed an applicable course”. The Institute conducts a four-week training for the District Magistrates prior to assumption of duty. Although there is a call for the extension of the duration of the training, the Institute is not able to do so due to budgetary constraints.
Although it is not prescriptive, SAJEI has introduced a week-long training for newly-appointed Senior Magistrates in order to capacitate them for their new roles and responsibilities.
For the current financial year, SAJEI has conducted training for newly-appointed Judges, Senior Magistrates and District Magistrates. The details of the training are provided below. JUDGES
