Rand Water | Integrated Annual Report 2025
INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPO
REPORT FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD
Guided by our long-term vision and the principles of integrated thinking, we have strengthened our governance frameworks, enhanced operational efficiencies, and deepened our stakeholder engagement.
Mr. Ramateu Monyokolo Chairperson of the Board
As Chairperson of the Board, I am privileged to lead an institution that continues to play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of South Africa through the provision of safe, reliable, and sustainable bulk water services. The past year has been marked by both challenges and opportunities. In the face of growing environmental pressures, infrastructure demands, and socio-economic challenges, Rand Water has remained steadfast in its mission to deliver water with integrity, efficiency, and foresight. Our ability to anticipate change, adapt to emerging trends, and invest in future-ready systems has been central to our success. Efforts to climate-proof Rand Water’s assets, such as reinforcing pump stations against flood risks and installing energy-efficient equipment, ensure that the organisation is not only meeting current demand but is also prepared for future uncertainties. This reporting period has been marked by significant progress in our strategic transformation journey. Guided by our long-term vision and the principles of integrated thinking, we have strengthened our governance frameworks, enhanced operational efficiencies, and deepened our stakeholder engagement. Our foresight driven approach has enabled us to anticipate emerging risks, harness opportunities, and align our efforts with national development priorities, including the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) and the National Development Plan (NDP). The Board has delineated four Strategic Goals to mitigate inherent risks in the water sector and grow the organisation. These goals encompass the development of alternative water and energy sources, ensuring Rand Water’s sustainability, and operationalising Rand Water Services to facilitate projects beyond Rand Water’s primary mandate. During the period under review, Rand Water secured approval for a Special Purpose Vehicle — a public to-public partnership between Rand Water Services and the Emfuleni Local Municipality — from both the Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Minister of Finance. This initiative is set to culminate in the establishment of a jointly owned enterprise. Furthermore, ZAWA, a state-owned water authority in Zanzibar, awarded Rand Water a contract to manage, operate, and maintain its water infrastructure. This accomplishment highlights Rand Water’s strategic emphasis on sustainability and regional expansion. Currently, initiatives are underway to investigate alternative water and energy sources to achieve the Board’s strategic goals in the coming years. The Board remains committed to ensuring that Rand Water continues to operate with the highest standards
