INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPO
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting
At Rand Water, we believe that true sustainability is about effective action. We have implemented proactive measures to reduce our environmental footprint and are positioning ourselves for a greener future. For the 2024/25 financial year, we continued to proactively report on our Scope 1 and Scope 2 Emissions and ensure alignment with set Sectoral Emission Targets (SET). This progress is a testament to our commitment to intentionally reduce our footprint, and work towards our ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2050. The table below shows the emission figures.

Total
Through current initiatives, we have already achieved a 0.27% decrease in total Scope 1 and 2 emissions, a reduction of 5,775.88 metric tonnes . This initial success lays the groundwork for a much larger impact, and we are optimistic that a far more significant positive change will be realised once our comprehensive climate change strategic objectives are fully implemented, with a long-term objective of low emission by 2050.
Water conservation and managing losses
Rand Water has adopted and customised the International Water Association (IWA) standard methodology for reporting non-revenue water (NRW). The reporting framework includes the following components: • Unbilled Authorised Consumption (UAC): Water used by Rand Water for operational purposes, such as process water, site consumption, and scour water during maintenance activities. • Apparent Losses: Financial losses resulting from inaccuracies in metering, data handling errors, or unauthorised consumption. • Unavoidable Annual Real Losses (UARL): Background leakage that is inherent to the water supply system and is not considered economically or technically feasible to repair. • Real (Physical) Losses: Actual water losses through leaks in the distribution network. This component is used to set corporate key performance indicators (KPIs). Rand Water’s performance was assessed against a KPI for avoidable water losses, expressed as a percentage of water produced. For the 2024/25 financial year, this KPI has been set at 5% and that has been achieved as shown in table below.

The table demonstrates that: although the KPI target has been met, there is still a continuous battle when it comes to physical losses, as they are some of the contributing factors to the NRW.
