25 February 1967 – 10 March 2023

In the sombre embrace of memory, we pay tribute to Monty, whose presence once illuminated our lives with warmth and kindness. Though he has tragically departed from this world, his essence remains etched within the fabric of our hearts, forever cherished and deeply missed. Monty was not merely a person but a beacon of light, radiat ing joy and compassion to all fortunate enough to cross his path. He possessed an uncommon grace that made him stand out in any crowd, o ering solace to those in need and spread ing love without reservation. In the wake of his untimely departure, we are left to grapple with the profound loss that permeates our souls. The echoes of his laughter, the warmth of his bear hugs, and your burning hand after he had high- ved you, a testament to the beautiful imprint he left upon our lives.

He taught us the enduring power of kindness, the impor tance of empathy, and the fragility of life itself. In honouring his memory, let us carry forward the lessons he imparted, striving to embody the love and compassion that de ned his existence. As we bid farewell to our Prince Monty, let us nd solace in the knowledge that he touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy that will endure through the ages. Though he may be gone from our sight, his spirit remains ever-pres ent, guiding us through the darkness with the light of his memory. Rest peacefully, dear Monty, knowing that you are deeply loved and profoundly missed. You may no longer walk among us; your spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were privileged to have known you. Until we meet again, may you nd eternal peace in the embrace of the heavens.

From the Editor

Among golfers it is often said that a “bad day at golf is better than a good day at work” ; well in my case I must say that this is axiomatic! You see, just after Covid, I ventured into a small business which prevented me from playing golf. Not that I was ever going to be any close to a professional golfer, but I played consistently. And then a month back after almost a 3-year hiatus I went to the golf course. As expected – it was a bad day at golf! But….. did I have a good time! This day allowed me to reminisce about why I played golf and what its absence meant to me.

As I laid up on the 1 st tee, I was already filled with trepidation and started to fear the intimidating hazards that lay ahead, and I allowed this fear to trap me from the greens. As you can guess, my game was quite dismal. When I reached the 10 th hole and as I reflected, I realised that the game of golf mirrors life. Your fears are your limitations. I made an affirmation that I will take one shot at a time. As ‘golfing luck’ would have it, the game finished quite decently for me. Philosophers continually propound the theory of ‘being in the moment’ as a life skill. Here on the golf course, you practice it with such ease. The game progressed, I practiced patience, and golf being a mental game, I garnered the mental acuity that patience brings. At the denouement of the game with my score being pleasantly better than expected, the greatest reward of the game was the 19 th hole. It wasn’t the excesses that made it enjoyable, but the camaraderie among the players and I missed the friendships I had developed over the many years of being a Lotus Golf Club member. The friendships are special. Hence, in the past year having lost two very dear friends was heartbreaking. Manish Devchand, fondly known as Monty, passed on the 10 th March 2023 and news of his passing devastated members and the community. The news of Lloyd Naidoo’s passing on the 29 th December 2023 was just as heartrending and shocking. Monty was an astute businessman but humble and unassuming. His modest demeanour masked his quick mind and wry sense of humour. Lloyd was the most generous and hospitable person I have met. His sense of humour, even now, brings a smile to my face. Both these gentlemen had extraordinary personalities; they will be sadly missed and forever remembered. Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, but the special moments we shared are memories that no one can steal. In conclusion, every round of golf played is a miniature battle against ourselves and the course. Golf demands focus, discipline, and self-awareness. It’s not just physical; it’s mental. The challenge lies in conquering our inner doubts, staying calm under pressure, and visualising success. When we sink that crucial putt or hit a perfect drive, we experience triumph. Golf is a canvas for our personal growth. So, next time you step onto the course muse on why you play. Remember the grass is always greener……. on the golf course!

After an epic 25 th Anniversary Celebration, it gives me great pleasure to present the Chairman’s report for 2024; the year we celebrate our club’s 30 th Anniversary. As we began 2020, the Covid 19 pandemic had reached South Africa. We were locked down and our weekly golf game was a thing of the past. As time CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

progressed, golf courses re-opened with restrictions in place. We found ourselves having to wear masks when checking in, putting with the flagstick still in and the boots of our cars became the 19 th hole. With all of the restrictions, we managed to enjoy a round of golf and socialise with our fellow players under the radar. We hosted two tournaments in 2020, prior to Covid. Thereafter, in 2021 we returned to our usual number of tournaments. Throughout the challenges and disruptions, our club remained united and resilient. The dedication and enthusiasm of our members have been the driving force behind our success. The following members are part of the current executive committee: Arvind Rowjee – Secretary Jagdeesh (Jack) Bhana – Treasurer Navin Chhiba – Records Clerk Indran Naidoo – Tournament Director My heartfelt gratitude to the executive committee for their selfless assistance and efforts in the running of the club. A special thanks to Jack Bhana who has served on the committee since inception. Gratitude and thanks to our Ex-chairman, Surendra Mistry who continues to serve the club in the background. A club is only as strong as its members.

In golf, as in life, it’s the follow through that makes the difference. - Anonymous “

A concerted effort is being made to engage the youth to encourage them to carry the club flag for another 30 years. A warm welcome to our new members. Our youngest member is 19 and the oldest 75 years old. Age is only a number and our older members are often seen on the Winner’s podium. Our club currently has a membership of 56 players. We sadly lost Manish (Monty) Devchand and Lloyd Naidoo in March and December last year. Monty was brother to me, after sharing a friendship for over 50 years. I was blessed to have played golf around the world with him. Our last trip together was Scotland in July 2022, where we played seven rounds in seven days. Monty and Lloyd both loved their golf, and were gentlemen both on and off the course. They were part of our Lotus Family and their sudden loss has left us devastated and heartbroken. We pray they are resting in peace and enjoying a round in the golfing heavens. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all our members, sponsors and volunteers for their ongoing support and dedication. Your passion and commitment make our “Lotus Family” a special place to be. I am confident the Lotus Golf Club will continue to thrive as a vibrant hub of friendship, laughter and camaraderie. Together, let us embrace the joy of golf and bonds of friendship that unite us. Cheers to another 30 years… Yours in golf,

Jay Naka Chairman

MESSAGES PAST CHAIRMEN

Shantoo Ramjee Congratulations to LOTUS GOLF CLUB on achieving their 30 th anniversary milestone. We have all undergone many challenges, from Covid, to loadshedding, to a poor economic climate, but the Club has been steadfast. Tournaments and events are extremely well-run and it’s always a pleasure to participate. Being a founder chairman, I do indeed feel honoured and proud of the achievements of the Club from its humble beginnings. May the Club continue with its great success for the next three decades! Ravi Chiboo It is indeed a privilege and great pleasure to convey a message to Lotus Golf Club on its 30 th anniversary. As a founding member and chairperson of the club during its infancy, it is truly a blessing to see that even with passing of 30 years, the club is still in existence and going strong. What started out then as a group of enthusiastic individuals with an idea to form a social golf group, which was not common then, in a side room of Gandhi Hall to where it is now, is testament to its remarkable achievement. With the passage of time there is always a natural attrition of members due to natural causes but that is a fact of life. The idea of starting a social golf club was a fantastic idea. I would like to believe that it added value to lives of the members whilst they were there. Every member looked forward to those golf days (upward of one hundred participants sometimes). On a personal level I wish and fervently hope that the members have all the success and enjoyment for the next 30 years. With kindest regards and Namaste to all.

Arvind (Arie) Narsi Namaste.

It is with a deep sense of pride that I wish to congratulate the LOTUS GOLF CLUB on this very special milestone of the 30 th anniversary. Very happy to hear that many young golfers are joining our club. May we go from strength to strength. Congratulations to the hard-working committee members for the awesome work they are doing. Hope you keep the LOTUS flag flying higher for many more years ahead. Thank you

Surendra (Surie) Mistry My experience with Lotus Golf Club started in 1994 and is be an enduring one. Being a member on the executive of this club, afforded me an opportunity to make many friends and associates. Acquaintances were made at different golf clubs during my 21 years as an executive member and these were nurtured and became lasting friendships. Members past and present must be proud of Lotus Golf Club reaching 30 years which is an achievement in anyone’s standard. Congratulations, and my heartfelt gratitude to all who made this possible. as well as to the future torchbearers who would like to see Lotus Golf Club achieve greater strides in the future. Dilip Chhiba The Lotus Golf Club has had a tremendous journey from the days when access to golf clubs wasn’t easy. The founding members had a vision of building a club and making the sport accessible to the community. Members through their knowledge, experience and drive, strove in their efforts which resulted in the club achieving over 120 members at one stage. With the evolution of the golf game, plenty courses to play and the disparate distribution of the community and Lotus Club members, the club has progressively become a closer-knit family of players. This year the club celebrates its silver anniversary, and I wish to take this opportunity to wish Lotus members a successful 30 th anniversary tournament and great golfing for the future.

History of Lotus Golf Club: 1994 – 2024

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Marcus Garvey

◆ In 2004 , the Club hosted its 10th anniversary held at Sun City on the 21 st and 22 nd March. ◆ In 2009 , the Club hosted its 15th anniversary held at Sun City on the 27 th and 28 th April. ◆ In 2014 , the Club hosted its 20 th anniversary held at Sun City on the 10 th and 11 th March. ◆ In 2019 , the Club hosted its 25 th anniversary held at Sun City on the 9 th and 10 th March. ◆ In 2024 , this tradition is still prevailing with the 30 th anniversary played at Sun City on the 13 th and 14 th April. Members of the Club have also been afforded the opportunity of playing at golf clubs far and wide – Mmabatho, Bethal, Orkney, Swaziland, White River, Graceland and numerous others. Under its leadership the Club also hosted several dinner and dances. It embarked on several outreach programmes, inter alia: Lenasia Cancer Association, ShriAdi ShankaraAshrama, Ubuntu, Jocod, Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Society, Midas Sport Academy, Kids for Life, among others. Over the years the membership has fluctuated, and we do not have the numbers of yesteryear. This can be attributed to various factors, - from members grouping together with friends and creating smaller golf clubs; to the fanning of the population of Lenasia to other areas that were previously closed due to apartheid, and there are a host of other contributing factors. This has however not affected the Club in its outreach endeavours. As Lotus Golf Club, we place a great emphasis on charity and though membership numbers are dwindling, we still continue to donate as generously as we previously did. However, it is the Club’s fervent wish that the younger generation inject their enthusiasm and reignite the embers. History is fact, remembering it helps us to build upon it to achieve greater heights. Viva Lotus Viva Viva!

It is with warm sentiment that we recall the beginnings and growth of Lotus Golf Club The launching of the Club began because of the enthusiasm and passion of a handful of golfing enthusiasts – namely Shantoo Ramjee, Surendra Mistry, Jack Bhana, Diar Kesa, Narendra Vallabh, Arvind Narshi, Ishwar Vithal, Kanti Lakha, Prakash Devchand, Balvant Vasanjee, Bhupendra Parbhoo, Madhu Devchand and non-golfer Boodram Narsi. These pioneers set up a committee with the objective of simply getting golfers who play at different golf clubs together. Subsequently golfers from the different clubs got together and formed a social club. It was agreed by the members present at that meeting held on the 9 th July 1994, at the Gandhi Hall, that a tournament would be held every second month at different golf courses. This was indeed an exciting venture, especially as golf and accessibility to the various clubs had just emerged in our budding democracy. The first tournament was played at the Roodepoort Golf Club on 31 st July 1994. It was the first of many tournaments to be played over the years to come. Over the months, membership at every tournament increased and the need to identify the club became necessary. And thus, the formation of LOTUS GOLF CLUB…. As with all formal structures, the need for a constitution arose which led to the club’s founding rules and regulations. Membership to the club was closed after it hit a resounding success of 120 members! The Club’s history has been eventful, with milestone anniversaries celebrated: ◆ In 1999 , on the 16 th May, a Charity Golf Day was held in Sun City to celebrate the Club’s 5 th anniversary. Golfers from Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa participated in the tournament. It was an astounding success. From the enthusiasm and interest shown by the members, the Club decided to host the tournament every five years, hence the following anniversaries were celebrated.

In Appreciation:

Jagdeesh (Jack) Bhana

Jagdeesh (Jack) Bhana was born in Krugersdorp but grew up in Bethal, a small town in Mpumalanga. He completed his primary school years in Bethal but had to complete high school in Actonville, Benoni. There was no high school for Indian and Coloured children in Bethal and they had to go to places with high school facilities for Indians. He completed his Matric in 1974 and continued his tertiary education at the University of Durban Westville. In 1978 he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Jack started working in 1979 for a small auditing practice and had to travel from Laudium, where he was boarding, to Johannesburg. During his stay in Laudium he was involved with the White Block Residents Association. He also served as a treasurer for the Laudium Bursary Committee and Laudium Inter-Primary Sports Association. Jack married in 1983 and moved to Lenasia from Laudium. In 1991 he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. His working career started with Goldstuck Herscovitz, a small auditing practice, where he served his articles. In 1986 he moved to Papilsky Hurwitz, a medium-sized auditing practice and in 1992 he joined Pema Lakha as an Audit Manager. He then decided to leave the auditing profession and in September 1996 he joined Transnet Rail Engineering, a division of Transnet, in their finance department. In 2009 he joined the Lenmed group as the Group Financial Accountant till his retirement in 2018. He has, however, continued to work for Lenmed on a contract basis. On the sporting side, Jack played cricket, tennis, table tennis, badminton, and squash at a social level. Soccer was played at club level and in his final year at primary school, he captained the school side. Currently he enjoys watching all types of sports on TV. Jack started playing golf in 1992 and was one of the golfers who attended the meeting

where the idea of forming a social golf club emanated. At the inaugural meeting of Lotus Golf Club, he was nominated as treasurer and has held this position ever since. It goes without saying that the position had its challenges. He has ensured that the Club’s financial records have been meticulously kept up to date (sincerely appreciated by club members) and has served the Club without reservation. On this 30 th anniversary, the Lotus Golf Club would like to thank you for your valuable contribution and for being such an integral part of the organisation. This resilience is truly commendable. Your passion, perseverance, and professionalism have made a lasting impact on our team and success. Thank you for your 30 years of service and dedication.

“Sooner or later, those who win are those who think they can.” ~ Paul Tournier.

No golfer wins every round, not even every tournament. But those who rise to the top each week certainly believe they can. Their belief is not based on the level of the others in the field, it is the belief in themselves. Lotus Golf Club is proud to acknowledge winners at the tournaments.

WATCH OUT , BURGLAR ABOUT! Foreword

I came across this article written for an Australian publication, MSL, which highlighted perfectly the dilemma faced by many golf clubs around the globe. It is a phenomenon experienced by almost all golfers where players manipulate their handicaps and purposely keep it high so that they can win competitions, even though they are actually pretty good golfers – we call them “ringers” in South Africa! It happens everywhere and muddies the great game of golf – it tarnishes the whole handicap system which seeks to level out a player’s skills and abilities and it needs to stop! Capturing incorrect higher scores or simply not capturing scores ruins the golfing experience overall – golf is meant to be enjoyable, even when we have mediocre games, but to compete against a decent player who “massages” their handicap, leads to players being indifferent to the handicapping system and deters good players from competitions, even though they play their hearts out, they know that there are players in the field competing with ulterior motives i.e. cheating on their handicaps just to be in the limelight and win prizes by stealing victory. We should be proud to play off lower handicaps as we have achieved something very few people can do – our aim should be to improve our game to the best we can get to, and that should be reflected in our handicaps – not to have manipulated handicaps in an effort to seek glory and walk away with the prizes. A recent club competition saw an amateur player win a stableford competition by a whopping 21 points when he scored 61 points and shooting 100 with his nearest competitor coming in with 41 points! It is often said that how a golfer plays his game of golf is a direct reflection of how he carries on his personal/business affairs and business deals are brokered on the golf course simply because

potential clients can trust their playing partners by observing how they approach their game and whether or not they cheat on their scores and handicaps. Let’s endeavour to keep it this way so that golf remains the litmus test for future business relationships and new ventures. Watch Out, Burglar About! - The Article By Adrian Logue A recent series of tweets from a beginner golfer described an appalling but all too plausible experience of being excluded from the second round of a two-round club competition – allegedly for being considered a “burglar” after posting the leading score in round one (the tweet is not supplied here for the privacy of the player). For emphasis – this is a relative beginner – a keen new convert to golf whose handicap is high but trending downward after only a dozen or so handicapped scores. Also, for emphasis – this player is a subscription-paying member of the club that was running the competition. And for further emphasis – the player was leading after the first round… This new golfer’s introduction to the game was typical – they’d been learning for around two years, joined a club and later found the courage to participate in competitions – an intimidating step up. Far from being encouraged and guided through the outmoded rituals of Australian competition (comp) golf, they describe an unwelcoming culture of suspicion and pernickety bureaucracy. The official explanation – as recounted by the player – was a hasty excuse about registration being required two weeks in advance on a piece

Lotus Golf Club • 30 th Anniversary Brochure • Page 20

of paper in the locker room – not just in the online booking facility (which accepted the player and registered them in the competition). Unofficially, a friend with knowledge of the decision claimed it was because a “regular” would be a “more deserving” champ… that alone is outrageous but compounding the issue the word “burglar” was thrown about… “A burglar?” the player asked, “what’s that?”. “Umm,” the friend stumbled, “it’s someone who keeps their handicap high to win competitions”. Understandably, the player was not familiar with this term and found the very concept perplexing. Like any new golfer, they are keen to improve and get their handicap down as rapidly as possible but are vexed by the inconsistency and fluky form familiar to all golfers. Surely no beginner can ever be considered a burglar? Burgl’dom is the exclusive realm of bitter, insecure, small-minded, seasoned golfers who believe themselves smart enough to play the system. Even then it goes against human nature to be marked with an index that is worse than one’s underlying ability. Despite what anecdotal claims are thrown about, the true burglar is a rare breed and extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence, which does not appear to have been provided in this case. The player’s own claim is extraordinary, and the particulars of this story might be challenged, but the familiarity of it cannot. This scenario and many like it are happening at golf clubs throughout Australia every day. Truly inclusive practices require more than just having the right software systems in place. Clubs should also welcome self-reflection on the human aspects of their golf operations and cultivate a culture that doesn’t tolerate clique-ish

behaviour and exclusion. In a bittersweet footnote – the player was permitted to participate in the “regular” comp on day two – but the score would not be allowed to count for the multi-round comp. They posted another excellent score – easily good enough to win the two-day aggregate which would have earned gold letters on an honour board. A potential proud achievement, but this new club member was denied that feeling of collegiate acceptance and celebration with new friends. Instead, they’re expressing fear and anxiety about competing in future comps. Growing the game anyone? Submitted by Indran Naidoo From the editor “For true success, it matters what our goals are. And it matters how we go about attaining them. The means are as important as the ends. How we get there is as important as where we go.” – Old Tom Morris

As per tradition, every five years the Club hosts a two-day tournament at Sun City: • On the 9 th March at the Lost City Golf Club. • On the 10 th March at the Gary Player Country Club. Lotus Golf Club - 25 th Anniversary SUN CITY GOLF

The Lost City Golf Course Day 1 of the tournament was held at the Lost City Golf Course with its undulating and rocky terrain and an 18-hole desert-style golf course, surrounded by breathtaking views across the bushveld was indeed a memorable experience. Many of the participants played at many exotic golf courses, nationally and internationally, but the Lost City having had live crocodiles and the green on the 13 th hole shaped as the

continent of Africa, made it one of the most unusual and interesting golf courses. It was also interesting to watch the competitiveness amongst the players. Gary Player Country Club Day 2 of the tournament was held at The 18-hole Gary Player Country Club Golf Course, designed by Gary Player, is an arduous course as it is a walking course. The welcome dinner the night before made it even more difficult! However, the fortitude of golfers was evident in some of the excellent golf played on the day. All in all, both days were fun-filled with a good measure of competitiveness and a great deal of laughter. Friendships were made and friendships were entrenched on these two days of golfing.

In memory of a dear brother Manish (Monty) Devchand 25 February 1967 – 10 March 2023

“Though you’ve left the fairways and greens, your presence lingers in the gentle sway of the grass and the whisper of the wind through the trees. Your love for the game ignited spirits and inspired countless swings. As we bid farewell to our Bandit, may your final tee-off lead to endless fairways of peace and tranquillity. Your legacy will forever echo across the courses you graced. Rest in eternal birdies, dear Brother. Until we tee-off again.”

Lotus Golf Club - 25 th Anniversary - Welcome Dinner

The 25 th anniversary was celebrated with a great deal of fanfare, the highlight being the dinner at the pool deck of the Cabanas, Sun Soho. The venue was catered exclusively for the Lotus Golf Club. The variety of offerings was staggering and catered for all palates, in fact even an epicure could have found no flaw. The setting, the venue, as well as the gourmet dinner, and spit braai, contributed to an ambience that was relaxed and congenial, culminating in an evening thoroughly enjoyed by golfers and guests alike. So much so that we had to remind some of the members that there was golf to be played the next day! The food and the company made for an unforgettable experience. The pictures tell the tale!

Lotus Golf Club - 25 th Anniversary

Many golfers played excellently throughout the year, and at Sun City, and it is necessary to acknowledge them. This was done at a Presentation Function organised at The Boss restaurant on the 30 th March 2019. Once again, the evening was organised with panache and the celebrations went on until the early hours of the morning. The evening had a celebratory atmosphere, almost carnival-like and we as the Executive extend our gratitude to the sponsors for the multitude of prizes for the raffle draw - making almost everyone feel like a winner. The Lotus Golf Club takes this opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate each and every member on their achievements. Presentation Function

High Tea

The 25 th Anniversary saw the introduction of a high tea for the ladies and the children, while the men teed off at the Lost City Golf Course. This event took place at the Cherry Lounge - Sun City Soho. Here the ladies shared their surprise at being thought of since the sentiment amongst the ladies was that their husbands’ lives revolve around golf. It was here that the ladies got to know each other on a much more social level. The gourmet offering and the exclusive venue was specifically for the Lotus Golf Club.

An up-and-coming player

Preshan Chetty Lotus Golf Club has recognised Preshan as a young and determined golfer with a great deal of talent.

This young man only began playing golf at the age of 20, yet his achievements in the past nine years have been astounding. What makes him unique and different is that he holds his club cross-handed like the legendary Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum, who dared to dream and succeed in the face of overwhelming adversity, which included a racist golfing establishment.

Preshan’s greatest achievement is winning the Lotus Winners Tournament three years in succession - 2022, 2023 and 2024. A hat trick indeed! His fair play on the course is commendable. This may be attributed to one of his iconic golfing heroes - Tiger Woods who aptly said that, “Achievements on the golf course are not what matters, decency and honesty are what matter.” Lotus Golf Club is proud to acknowledge this achievement. He is also the youngest member to captain the Goodfellas Golf Club.

Preshan humbly attributes his inspiration to his dad, Dayalan, who in his own right has been an avid golfer, winning numerous accolades and awards under the Lotus Golf Club banner. It is his ardent belief that his success and his father’s success in golf is that their philosophy of life is reflected in the game of golf: you play hard, you get acknowledged for your successes and you earn the respect of your peers by your ethical conduct. In addition, Preshan takes a page out of Rory Mcilroy’s (a role model for Preshan) book of life - who stated, “My mum and dad worked very hard to give me the best chance in - not just golf but in life. I’ll never be able to repay Mum and Dad for what they did .... I’ll do whatever it takes to look after them.” In conclusion, Preshan hopes to become a scratch golfer and the thrill of achieving a hole in one. (just remember, drinks are on you - when you do!). Most importantly like Papwa, he hopes to facilitate change by making golf more accessible to the disadvantaged communities.
