[J]ust before the train moved off Van Zyl (sic) declared we had to go on and not detrain there so all in a hurry we bundled back to find at the last moment just as we moved off that the stupid [Van Zijl] was wrong. However, there was now nothing to be done but go on to the next station what we did. There we got down and were led by an official through the station round the corner up a street and round another corner to the back of Colpetty station again, followed all the way by a most inquisitive convoy of natives. Just as we arrived at the back of the station, it looked such an unpromising place that Sennett
thought it was the goal [gaol?] where we were to be kept until it could be heard what was to be done with us. However, it turned out to be the station right enough and there was the train waiting. We now found, however, that Heyzer [who had organised the match] who had met us, with Van Zyl and De Villiers who had jumped off at the last moment had gone in search for us. So we were kept in a ferment lest they should come back too late for the train. But they came up in time, escorted by several of the Colts, some of whom got into the train to accompany us as far as their homes, which lay on the line between Colombo and Mt Lavinia. Station after station as we passed we saw quite a little crowd all waiting to get a peep at us. At one place I distinctly
