Although South Africa is no longer a member of the Executive Board, it still played a vital role in contributing to the examination of the programme of work and budget allocations for UNESCO, and ensured that Africa and gender equality remained the key priorities for UNESCO. This was done through participation in the Africa Group and the country’s status as an Observer in the Executive Board 8. Virtual Ministerial Meeting of the Foreign Policy and Global Health (FPGH), 3 September 2020 South Africa, Thailand, France, Norway and Senegal expressed the importance of solidarity and collaboration to mitigate the pandemic, sharing of resources and best practices; as well as to strengthen the resilience, preparedness, response to health emergencies; and recognised the important role of the WHO in leading the global response to the pandemic; as well as ensuring universal health coverage (UHC), leaving no one behind
