4 12 regional tourism reports on tourism-promotion events to promote South Africa as a preferred tourist destination, the opportunities and barriers The outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic has severely constrained tourism- promotion efforts during the reporting period. International travel restrictions and lockdown measures introduced throughout the global community contributed to the limited implementation of planned tourism promotion events and initiatives. Following the easing of travel restrictions during the second half of 2020, South Africa, together with its domestic partners, such as SA Tourism, as well as Missions, sought innovative ways to encourage foreign nationals to consider travelling to South Africa, in an attempt to contribute to increased economic growth, which had been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
