Government provides a range of supporting material to help councillors in their understanding of the MFMA and municipal fi nance generally.

National Treasury supports the implementation of the MFMA in a number of different ways, and has developed a series of MFMA circulars, guides, templates and tools that are available on the National Treasury website. Any enquiries on the MFMA should be addressed to mfma@treasury.gov.za. The website also contains a ‘frequently asked questions’ section (or FAQs), which will readily answer certain questions that you may have. In addition, the Department of Provincial and Local Government (dplg) and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) have developed various materials to help councillors in their role, such as the “Handbook for Ward Councillors” and the “Handbook for Municipal Councillors”.
