RAND WATER ANNUAL REPORT 2023
CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REVIEW
and technical positions. This shows the interest Rand Water has in seeing the advancement of women in management and technical areas, notwithstanding the requirement to compete in a highly competitive environment with the private sector and other state-owned entities. Rand Water also attained impressive results that exceeded set targets in the training in learnerships (97); bursaries (34); and graduate programmes (158). These results demonstrate that Rand Water continues to operate with a high-performance culture in mind. The organisation exceeded its growth targets as both the gross profit and net profit margins in secondary activities reflected impressive performance. However, Rand Water recognises the difficult financial position of the customer base for secondary activities. The financial position of local municipalities continues to remain strained. Therefore, Rand Water has taken the decision to create an entity specifically tasked with finding business from local municipalities; implementing Ministerial directives, and from the rest of the African continent. There is recognition that the purpose and nature of Rand Water requires transformation taking advantage of significant opportunities upstream and downstream of the Rand Water business. The Rand Water of the future must be modelled to take advantage of identified opportunities. Poor service delivery at municipal level presents such an opportunity. The Rand Water of the future requires agility to out-compete both public and private sector players. Rand Water Services has been identified as a vehicle that will take advantage of this business currently defined as secondary activity. Rand Water was appointed by DWS as an implementing agent under a Ministerial Directive for the Vaal River system intervention, and the Section 63 of the Water Services Act, Act No. 108 of 1997 intervention. This work and other expansion programmes will be undertaken

In spite of all challenges Rand Water has been faced with, including the inherent prolonged effect of COVID-19, international political and economic environment, and climate change amongst others, we still managed to fulfil our mandate as demonstrated by our performance achievements. It is against this background that we acclaim the excellent work that Rand Water has performed for over a century as we celebrate 120 years since its establishment. It is indeed an occasion to honour the humble beginnings of Rand Water. This Integrated Annual Report signifies the remarkable results from the hard work of all Rand Water staff.
