should promote the recording and dissemination of information describing such knowledge. This will be achieved through the establishment of provincial Indigenous Knowledge Documentation Centres (IKDCs) where the collection, documentation, storage and dissemination of indigenous knowledge and related activities will take place. Communities will be able to record and update information about their knowledge into the National Indigenous Knowledge Management System at the IKDCs. The initiative received seed funding from the Department of Science and Innovation and was launched in 2017. Between 2017 and 2019, the Gauteng IKDC piloted the National Recordal Systems project in partnership with the National Department of Science and Innovation in the Sokhulumi Traditional Council, ward 105. To date, the IKDC has been able to catalogue 501 IK claims in the categories of African Traditional Medicine and Traditional Food. Of these, 275 indigenous knowledge claims were documented in the categories of traditional food (152) and traditional medicine (123) in 2019/20. During its pilot stage in the Sokhulumi community, this oral history documentation project bene ¿ ted 174 IK holders (54 male and 120 female). The project also empowered three youth IK recorders and four members from the community steering committee employed from the community. In the community of Tswelopele, situated in Magaliesburg under the Mogale City Municipality and the leadership of the Tswelopele Communal Property Association, the IKDC employed three youth IK recorders from the community to be responsible for documenting the IK data and a three-member steering committee appointed from the Tswelopele Community. Geographical Names The South African Geographical Names Council Act (No. 118 of 1998) (SAGNC) provides for the establishment of Provincial Geographical Names Committees in terms of Section 2(2)(a). The Gauteng Geographical Names Committee (GGNC) is appointed by the MEC for Arts and Culture and is an advisory body to the MEC in matters related to the SAGNC. The GGNC is regulated by the Promotion

on the provincial ¿ scus; there are no additional resources that can be allocated to these services. Following the enactment of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999, the department implemented heritage programmes such as the National Symbols Programme and has identi ¿ ed and protected a number of sites which has resulted in liberation heritage routes being identi ¿ ed in all ¿ ve Corridors of the province. The programme has reached 169 schools in Gauteng through the distribution of national and African Union À ags. The department has also identi ¿ ed more than 19 heritage sites and 6 heritage routes that are to be included in the tourism plan of the province. Language Development Gauteng is a cosmopolitan and multilingual province where all 11 South African of ¿ cial languages (Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, IsiSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa and isiZulu) are spoken. Language and cultural rights are central to all considerations of human rights in the contemporary world. Following the enactment of the Gauteng Provincial Languages Act of 2016, the department has implemented language programmes in partnership with municipalities and GDE. Programmes including Translating and Editing, International Mother Language Day, Deaf Debate, Deaf Sport Tournament, Deaf Spelling Bee Competition, Translation Day, Writers’ Workshop and Multilingual Debates. Indigenous Knowledge Systems In 2012, the department developed the Gauteng Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) policy in line with the national IKS Policy of 2004 by the Department of Science and Technology and the Intangible Cultural Heritage policy by the National Department of Arts and Culture. The policy was developed to encourage the identi ¿ cation, protection and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems. In order for Gauteng to move from a resource base to a knowledge base in terms of indigenous knowledge with economic advantage, it is envisaged that the National Recordal System (NRS) initiative
