• The resourcing of schools with books that are written by young authors • The development of a new school library catalogue to procure library resources with the allocated Resource Target Table budget • The hosting of exhibitions in all education districts for teachers to identify and select relevant library resources for purchase • To assist schools in the revitalization and the setting-up of existing school libraries Incremental Introduction of African Languages (IIAL) The Incremental Introduction of African Languages (IIAL) is being implemented in Grades 1 to 3 across the fifteen GDE districts. The number of implementing schools has increased to 356, with 200 teacher’s posts being allocated to these schools. There will be ongoing monitoring and support of these schools. Various workshops based on a needs analysis will be conducted to ensure effective teaching of the languages that were chosen by the schools. The schools have been provided with toolkits to support implementation. Mathematics Intervention The Department will continue with the roll-out of the Grade 8 and 9 Mathematics Strategy in 454 secondary schools. Schools will be provided with maths kits, lesson plans and DVDs to enhance teaching and learning. Grade 8 and 9 educators will be trained on content knowledge and assessment practices to improve the quality of teaching and learning. Vigorous monitoring and support of the implementation of the strategy will be conducted by district officials on an ongoing basis. The supply of mathematics kits and accompanying mediation will ensure effective and optimal utilisation of the kits and this will form an integral part of the implementation of the strategy. Grade 9 learner support programmes and residential camps will be planned to strengthen learner mathematics content knowledge and career guidance as well as learner performance scores. The evaluation of the Grade 8 and 9 strategies will be conducted to assess the impact of the programme. An external evaluation will be conducted in 2019. The outcome will further intensify the implementation of the strategy. The SMT programme will focus on capacity building regarding curriculum management. The emphasis will be on the planning, scheduling and tracking of curriculum coverage during the year. This programme will be carried out on an ongoing basis. Priority 3: Defending the “crown” – continuing the improvement of quality learning in the FET Band Improve the Pass Rate and Quality of Matric Results The Department will review the effectiveness and efficiency of continuing to fund the curriculum interventions. To improve matric results in 2019 the department will allocate resources to implement the following intervention programmes:
